- Wild-Type Betta and Kissing Gourami are both labyrinth fish — they claim the same surface territory and will fight, especially between males.
- Very different sizes (Kissing Gourami 12" vs Wild-Type Betta 2.5") — these two need different tanks, and the smaller fish will be out-competed at feeding time.
- Only a narrow water hardness overlap — keep both around 6–8 dGH.
Sweet spot: both do well at 76–82°F and pH 6.5–7.5 — aim there.

How to make it work
- Keep a large, established shrimp colony in a heavily planted tank with moss and cover so enough survive to breed.
- Use a larger, well-decorated tank with sightline breaks, keep everyone well-fed, and add the calmer fish first.
